“Going for a period of silence is one of the most insightful, powerful things you can do in life.” – Dr. Naram
Before my diagnosis I thought only very spiritual people who did not have jobs meditated. And how lucky were they to have the time for it!? As a single mom of 3 very active children, along with running a business without family help or financial support, I felt like I never had time. I so wished I could go back and tell my 21– 30 year old self that meditation is a must for the rest of your life to prevent failures and poor decisions, relieve stress, and to keep healthy. I did not take the time to connect with my soul. I read so many cancer books who recommended meditation as a stress relief. They failed to mention it is really about connecting to your heart and soul. The bible says Sit and be Still. God said it for a reason! Meditations allow your soul to evolve.
“Be still and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
Meditation reduces the stress chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline. This is huge for those of us dealing with cancer, other illnesses, or life in general! When you don't know how fast the cancer is growing, if it will return, or where it will next appear, fear puts the body under a lot of stress.
There is an increase in the anti-aging hormone DHEA formation (yep, meditating makes us younger!) DHEA reduces chronic inflammation, which is why it helps prevent chronic disease. Inflammation is the common thread underlying all chronic illnesses. DHEA boosts collagen formation, which is why it's recommended for skin health. DHEA balances hormones.
Improving the body's immunological system in the fight against cancer and other diseases is critical. A stronger immune system fights illnesses and heals the body more quickly.
"It's when our immune system fails us that cancer takes hold, so it makes sense that a high-performing immune system is one of the most important ways to defend against cancer, and virtually all diseases." - Tony Robbins in Life Force.
Meditation helps to improve cognitive function and memory. Mindfulness meditation teaches you to be in the present moment without judging yourself. As a result, you are less likely to become distracted. Your mental functions enhance when you feel calm. I know on days that I meditate; I think much more clearly. Oh, if only I'd known about the benefits of meditation when I was in college!
Cancer patients frequently complain of aches and pains, and I am aware that the type of cancer they claim I have, produces random pain. Meditation can help people cope with their pain symptoms better. When you have less pain, you can take less pain medications. Sometimes I feel like my liver is being stabbed, sometimes I get a scorching feeling, sometimes I double over, and sometimes I just feel uncomfortable. Without a doubt, meditation helps to reduce the pain!
Meditation makes people happier! Positive thoughts and sensations are considered to flow more freely while you meditate. Even a few minutes of meditation each day can have a significant effect. The recommended amount of time is 20 minutes every day. This notion is supported by scientific evidence: comprehensive studies were conducted on a group of Buddhist monks while they were meditating. The prefrontal cortex is the portion of the brain associated with happiness. The results of the study had shown that this portion of the monk’s brains were overly active!
I struggled at first as my mind raced constantly. I discovered guided meditations and learned that practice and persistence are key. The more I practiced, the better I became and the more I liked them. I learned from many teachers and approaches.
Dr Joe meditations are almost daily for me because they are scientifically proven to heal the body. Many scientists, universities, and even the government are interested in his work. He has numerous testimonials from people who have been healed as a result of his work. To truly grasp his teachings, I read his books, completed his online progressive training, and attended his Advanced Meditation retreat and Advanced Follow up retreat. Dr. Joe believes that the key to healing is to raise your energy to a higher frequency. He teaches that through meditation, you can raise your energy vibrations to a level where you can heal yourself and others. Under the Energy tab, I have a video about my experience at my first meditation retreat and the miraculous healing I had.
I also enjoy meditating with Master Co. Master Co’s approach is spiritual rather than scientific. Master Co’s enthusiasm for spiritual instruction is truly inspiring. He presently does Anchor the Light six times per week, during which he provides a free spiritual instruction followed by a short meditation. He teaches that in order to heal and prosper, any blocked energy must be cleansed. Twin Hearts meditation (simple 15-minute practice) is one way to do so while blessing the Earth and all Beings with God’s Divine love. The movement of Divine energy through your body cleanses the chakras. Simply look him up on Facebook and follow him there, or visit his website.
Deepak’s 21 Days of Abundance was my first introduction to meditation, and I believe it is an excellent place to begin. Deepak spends roughly 6 minutes lecturing about abundance and spiritual laws and 8 minutes meditating. Knowing and applying the Spiritual Laws brings abundance into your life. These are for you if you wish to increase your wealth. You can view them on his website or on YouTube. His lectures are also available on YouTube. Day 8’s Law of Potentiality is my personal favorite!
Some of my favorite and most simple 15-minute meditations are by Abraham Hicks. My life has been transformed by the lessons I’ve learned on YouTube and the numerous books I’ve read about how emotions control our lives and how to connect with our inner being. My favorite of these is the Relationship meditation. Her voice is so calm and soothing along with the breathing exercises.=
Transcendental Meditation is simply listening to a sound and remaining still for at least 20 minutes. You can keep your mind from wandering and interrupting your meditation by repeatedly repeating a mantra or word. I attended a workshop to learn how to do it and still do not do it well, yet I know of many that prefer this type of mediation.
Silent Mediation is a practice of quiet introspection and focus offers numerous benefits by modern research yet it an ancient practice. It took me awhile to get my mind quiet enough to enjoy yet now it is my favorite. You can train your mind that you own your body. Simply sitting still for 15 minutes in the quiet is life changing and I feel is a key component of my healing.
“We can, in the final analysis, choose to think only those thoughts which we want to think, and it is this power of mental choice that gives man freedom. By it he is given the power to remake himself into any image he can envisage. He can heal his body, heal his soul, alter and exalt his own personality, enhance his will power… All the power of an individual lies in his disciplining his own consciousness, all his effectiveness consists of his being able to produce faith within himself. For it is only faith that is able to develop in us a mental image contrary to the one we have been entertaining.” – U.S. Anderson in the book Mind Over Matter.
Mindset accounts for 80% of the Anything is Possible formula. Please take care of your mind and feed it wisely. Your emotions and beliefs are created by your thinking. Your self-limiting thoughts can influence your thoughts and words, leading you down the wrong path in life. If you think you are sick and go around talking about your sickness, you will be sick. If you think and say “I am healthy”, You will be healthy. If you keep saying, “I’m fighting cancer,” you’ll keep fighting cancer. You are what you think about and what you speak out loud. Your cells are always listening!
Mindset is largely influenced by what we focus on, the Meaning we give, the language we use, and our physiology.
“Where focus goes, energy flows.” – Tony Robbins
The quality of our life can be determined by our focus. What we focus on is what we attract in our lives. When we focus on what’s good in our lives, we attract more good into our lives. When we focus on what’s going wrong, unknowingly we attract more things going wrong. Asking ourselves empowering questions is one way we can refocus our attention. All day, we all chat to ourselves. When asking questions, be gentle with yourself. If you ask yourself, “Why am I such a loser?” your mind will give you answers. If you ask, “Why Me?” Your mind will respond. If you ask yourself, “How can I empower myself? How can I maintain my health?” Your mind will respond. Always begin each day with empowering questions. Some of my morning questions include: “How can I empower myself and others even more today?” What can I do today to honor myself even more? How can I improve my health today? I say even more to emphasize that I am doing it now and want to do it even more. Spend a few minutes writing down two empowering questions you may ask yourself and then use them!
“The quality of your life depends on the quality of your questions.” – Dr. Naram
Another way we focus is by defining our Why. If our Why is big enough, it will provide us with the motivation and drive to achieve whatever goal we set for ourselves. Setting goals isn’t enough. When we connect the Outcome or WHY to the Goal, it becomes real and heartfelt. The heart is what sparks our desire to achieve our goals and propels us forward. In the book Ancient Secrets of a Master Healer by Clint G Rogers he explains the Master Healer Dr. Naram always asked a key question to those he was healing. The question was “What do you Want?”. Dr. Naram said, “Ninety-five percent of people on this planet do not know what they want”. Do you know what you want? If you do not know what you want, how can you be fulfilled? Take a few minutes to write down what you want, what do you really want and finally what do you really really want? And WHY you want that. What is your ultimate outcome and how does it fulfill you? Go for it!
“Human Beings have the Awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowering them or one that literally can save their lives.” – Tony Robbins
The meaning you give anything can build you up or break you down. Yes, they say I have tumors in my liver. I like to call them little boogers because, like snot, you can sneeze them out, pluck them out, whatever you have to do to get them out! I make them removable rather than incurable. I used to give the cat scans every three months the meaning and feeling of taking a college exam that determined your fate and you didn’t know what to study for- talk about stress and making myself a mind mess! The anxiousness would begin two weeks before the actual appointment. I wasn’t the best version of myself to be around, especially when I was attempting to disguise my anxiousness from people. Now I give cat scans and lab work the meaning of a Wellness Checkup to see how WELL I am doing. Everyone needs a wellness checkup; I’m just getting mine more frequently.
I used to give chemotherapy the meaning of death. I saw my step father die from effects of chemotherapy as well as several friends. When I was told I had to take it as tumors growing and could no longer do surgeries I was crushed.
The first day I took chemo with that belief, I got so sick and had to go stop. I had to take antibiotics for a week. I knew I had to change the meaning I gave the chemo or it would not work. I prayed to God to give me the right meaning, and it came to me- Love and see them as magical pills. Every time I now take the chemo pills, I pray over them and Thank God they are the magic pills removing the mutated cells then I imagine the pink pills turning in to pink elephants and sucking the cancer out. It’s working. Within 3 months, the tumors reduced by 50% and some are gone.
By changing the meaning, you change your story, which can change your life.
I had to change the meaning of abuse in my childhood. Emotional pain has been replaced by an understanding of how everyone is here to teach me a lesson and is simply doing their Best with the experiences, training, beliefs, thoughts, and emotions they have. Every scenario has the potential to teach us something. By knowing people are just doing their best, forgiveness is much easier.
“The biggest leverage we have in any situation is physiology -because it works so fast, and it works without fail. Physiology and internal representations are totally linked. If you change one, you instantly change the other. “ “If you change your physiology – that is your posture, your breathing, patterns, your muscle tension, your tonality– you instantly change your internal representations and your state.” – Tony Robbins in his book Unlimited Power
Your body movements are another aspect of Mindset! It’s pretty simple- imagine a depressed individual with their head down, shoulders sagging, slow breathing with sighs, slow and soft speech, and a sense of loss. Consider Superman, Wonder Woman, or a successful individual. How do they stand? Head held high, shoulders back, normal or slightly rapid breathing of enthusiasm, speaks boldly, and feels fantastic. I have a foot-long scar from my belly button to my chest after my surgery, and it hurt a lot. Standing up straight ached. I was hunched over for two months and then I, who had always been Miss Positive…started feeling depressed, stopped caring about my agency. They told me they got all the cancer out- I should have been excited, but I wasn’t. I had no understanding why until I attended Tony Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within. I walked in as a victim, in pain, slumped over. While there, I learned about this incredible tool for attitude, and walked out as Wonder Woman. Get up right now and make your Success Stand! This is SO powerful. When I walk into my oncologist office and sit down to wait- I make sure my chest and head are held high so no matter what he says- I can celebrate or let it bounce away until I can improve the meaning of it. When the pain starts, I don’t just sit and focus on it- I get up and move around to change my state. Just walking is one of the best Mindset tools. When upset- walk it out. If you cannot walk, dance it out with your arms, whatever it takes to change your physiology.
There are many excellent books and courses on mindset. I encourage you to feed your mind as a gift to yourself. The best investment you can make is in yourself!!! As a business owner, I am aware that it provides the highest rate of return.
